The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Recommended age range: 10+

A comfortable hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, from "The Hobbit" (I may have a post on that soon) is having his eleventy-first (111) birthday. He owns something very precious to him, and it's giving him long years. He passes it down to his beloved Frodo, who inherits a magic ring that will mark the beginning of a long, perilous journey. And that's not it. Mysterious black riders are following them...sniffing for them.

I recommend this story highly. Though not considered a children's book, I feel older kids and young adults will treasure this fantasy book for a long, long time. It may also be a good read aloud for ages 8 and up. It can be harder for younger kids below that age to understand some of the concepts in the story.

The adventure is top-quality, and it doesn't teach a negative attitude. It inspires in many different ways, too! The way J.R.R. Tolkien writes makes you feel like you're there traveling with the company and causes you to feel empathy and emotion for them. This book teaches great morals, too.

Middle Earth (the setting) is pretty much the heart of all fantasy worlds. It has complex characters, realms, creatures, languages, and even more!

There is also a movie for it. It is about three hours long, and is amazing! The actors they chose are perfect.

Have fun!!!

Warning:

  • There are lots of scary elements in it. I don't really recommend it for younger children below eight.
